About Brisbane History and Today
Brisbane began as a penal colony in 1825. With many of its original, official buildings still standing, close to the banks of the Brisbane River. This young city's river was named after Sir Thomas Brisbane in 1823, then Governor of New South Wales.
Declared the capital of Queensland in 1859, Brisbane was incorporated into a city in 1902. The City of Greater Brisbane has been managed by the Brisbane City Council (BCC) since 1925. The BCC is responsible for suburban rejuvenation, and 'greener' public transport systems. With small livestock being sold in the Queen Street Mall until the 1960's, Brisbane was sometimes called a 'backwater' until the city hosted World Expo '88, which began a series of developments that carried Brisbane into a new era of becoming Australia's most liveable city.
